The practice of stand up paddle consists of paddling on the water while standing on a board. It's a formula much easier said than done. Indeed, staying balanced on the paddle board requires some trial and error if you're a beginner and, above all, knowing the right tips to correct your posture.

Tip 1, The gaze

To begin, it's best to straighten your head and look into the distance at the landscape. Avoid looking at the board, the paddle, or your feet. Doing so may throw off your balance and cause you to fall into the water on your first attempt. Stay focused on the horizon, and everything will go smoothly.

Tip 2, Maintaining balance on the board

Always align your center of gravity with the middle of the paddleboard. If you position yourself too far forward or too far back, you risk being off balance while paddling and capsizing. Place your feet shoulder-width apart on each side of the carrying handle. This serves as a good reference point for finding the center of your board. If needed, you can slightly readjust your feet to feel more balanced.

Tip 3, Proprioception on the paddleboard

Now, you'll engage your muscles to achieve perfect proprioception. Bend your legs slightly, and keep your back straight. It's often said that your position on a paddleboard is similar to that of a skier.

Tip 4, The paddle

Your paddle should stay in the water for as long as possible. Indeed, it is preferable to have your paddle submerged in the water because it is a considerable support, like an elderly person with their cane. In paddleboarding, the paddle is like a third leg for practitioners.

Tip 5, Your feet

Next, keep your feet flat on the board, even if you have to have them in a duck position. Really avoid putting pressure on your heels or worse, on the tips of your toes. Your balance will be perfect if your toes remain flat with your knees bent.

Tip 6, From left to right

You are finally standing on your board to practice SUP. Paddle slowly by alternating from left to right to see how you feel in motion.

Tip 7, Don't fall

In case of imbalance and the risk of falling off your paddle, lower your center of gravity by bending your legs much more. You should also hold on by pressing the paddle blade on the water. This will straighten you up on the board and then you are ready to go on an adventure on your paddle.
